Abstract

Spicules of the lithistid sponges are studied from Paleogene deposits of the Verchovtzev depression Ukrainian Shield (Middle Dnieper). For the first time a taxonomic composition of the lithistid sponges which are lived in the Late Eocene basin of Verchovtzev depression Ukrainian Shield is supposed by the spicules morphological analysis. There are sponges of ten geneses and seven families presented in paleocoenosis: Theonellidae (geneses Discodermia, Theonella, Lerouxia, Rhagadinia). Chenendoporidae (genus Chenendopora), Phymaraphiniidae (genus Prokaliapsis), Phymatellidae (genus Phymatella), Plinthosellidae (genus Plinthosella), Corallistidae (genus Neophrissospongia), Pleromidae (genus Pleroma). The families Theonellidae (geneses Lerouxia, Rhagadinia) and Plinthosellidae (genus Plinthosella) are dominated. According to the classification of M.M. Ivanik (2003) three new morphospecies of spicules are described: Phyllotriaena partita T.A.Ivanova morphosp.n., Ph. araneola T.A.Ivanova, morphosp.n., Tetracrepides semiornatus T.A.Ivanova, morphosp.n. The first and second of them are very similar with dermal spicules of sponges from family Theonellidae. Second morphospecie is similar by structure to dermal spicules of sponges from family Phymaraphiniidae too. Tetracrepides semiornatus is morphologically similar to desmas of sponges from families Plinthosellidae and Phymaraphiniidae. Their stratigraphical meaning is determined. These spicules are characteristic for the Obuchovian Suite and would be used as the paleontological criterion of the Obuchovian Suite determination in geological sections of the Middle Dnieper region.Key words: Porifera, Lithistida, spongiospicula, desma, phyllotriaena, Upper Eocene, Obuchovian Regiostage, Ukrainian Shield, Middle Dnieper region.
